How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing: Step-by-Step Guide

Wrapping your hands correctly is one of the most important injury prevention habits in boxing. Here's the step-by-step method we teach at Blindside Boxing Academy.

Hand wraps are one of the most important pieces of equipment in boxing, yet they're often overlooked by beginners. Proper hand wrapping protects the small bones in your hand, supports your wrist, and prevents the knuckle injuries that can sideline you for weeks. Learning to wrap correctly from day one is one of the best habits you can build as a new boxer.

What You Need

  • ▸180-inch cotton hand wraps (the standard length for most adults)
  • ▸Clean hands
  • ▸About 3-4 minutes per hand

Step-by-Step Wrapping Method

Start by placing the loop around your thumb. This anchors the wrap and ensures it doesn't slip during training. With your hand spread wide (fingers apart), wrap around your wrist 3-4 times, moving from the thumb side toward the pinky side. Keep the wrap snug but not tight enough to cut off circulation.

Next, wrap across the back of your hand and around your knuckles 3-4 times. Your hand should still be spread wide during this step. The wrap should cover all four knuckles evenly. Then wrap between each finger: bring the wrap between your pinky and ring finger, across the back of your hand, between your ring and middle finger, across the back, between your middle and index finger, and across the back.

After wrapping the fingers, wrap around the thumb once, then make a figure-eight pattern across the back of your hand and around your wrist. Finish by wrapping the remaining length around your wrist and securing the velcro closure.

Common Wrapping Mistakes

  • ▸Wrapping too tight — your fingers should not turn blue or feel numb
  • ▸Not spreading your fingers during wrapping — this causes the wrap to bunch when you make a fist
  • ▸Skipping the finger wraps — this leaves the knuckles vulnerable
  • ▸Wrapping too loose — the wrap will shift during training and provide no protection

When to Replace Your Wraps

Hand wraps should be washed after every training session (they absorb significant sweat) and replaced when they start to lose elasticity or develop holes. Most serious boxers have 3-4 pairs of wraps so they always have a clean, dry pair available.
